Apple Pay is going to be available in Walgreens stores across the United States beginning Saturday, October 18, according to an internal memo that has been leaked online. The document, meant for Walgreens employees, says customers who have compatible Apple devices "will immediately be able to use the service." A Saturday launch throws Apple Pay right in at the deep end. It's the busiest day of the week for retailers, and it can cause havoc when payment systems go down. But Walgreens clearly has plenty of confidence in the service, which promises to be the simplest, quickest, and most secure payment method you've used to date. According to the memo, which was obtained by MacRumors, offering Apple Pay supports Walgreens' mission to be "America's Most Loved Pharmacy-led Health, Wellbeing and Beauty Enterprise." It also continues the company's commitment to "ultimate customer convenience." The launch will go ahead just two days after Apple holds its next special event . In addition to new iPads , the Cupertino company is expected to unveil new iMacs with Retina displays , and provide launch details for Yosemite, its next-generation Mac OS X operating system. Apple may also provide more details on the launch of Apple Pay, which hasn't yet rolled out since it was announced alongside the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus last month. Walgreens won't be the only retailer to support Apple Pay early; Apple has confirmed that McDonald's, Staples, M ...
Over the past few years, Apple's much anticipated smartwatch has generated massive amounts of hype. And in recent months, the buzz surrounding the Apple Watch has only increased with the successful Kickstarter launch of the Pebble Smartwatch and the release of Android Wear watches from Motorola, LG, and Samsung. The hype has spread beyond the tech world and seeped into the teenage zeitgeist. Up until now, no one has designed a smartwatch that appealed to the more than 30 million teens in the U.S. As I stated in my commentary on the Pebble when it was released, the device was … Read More on GeekWire ...
We're often told that having choice is always and absolutely a good thing. The fact that we're told it most often by politicians should be a clue that this is irredeemable nonsense. In fact, thanks to a 2000 paper called When Choice is Demotivating: Can One Desire Too Much of a Good Thing? by Sheena Iyengar and Mark Lepper, we know it's nonsense. You might have heard of it by its more colloquial name: the jam experiment. In this study, the researchers tested how shoppers responded to choice. Given a selection of 24 jams, just 3% of shoppers picked up a jar. Narrow that choice to a more manageable six, and suddenly a third of the subjects in the test picked a preserve. The authors concluded that people can suffer from "choice overload" - that when you're presented with too many options, you freeze up, unable to pick between them. It follows then that if a company wants people to buy its products, it actually shouldn't follow the classical free market teachings of offering a broad, diversified range. Keep it simple, or the customer might well turn away in frustration before they get anywhere near checkout. There is a parallel with Apple here. The accepted rhetoric is that when Steve Jobs rejoined the company in 1997 (after being ousted in 1985 by then-CEO John Sculley), his most brutal but vital act was to rationalise the company line-up by cancelling projects and ditching products. In the 90s, Apple had reacted to the threat of th ...
Several retailers have mentioned they are not ready to adopt Apple Pay yet, but there still are a handful of retailers who are going to implement Apple's smart payment solution. Jeff Bezos is moving into brick-and-mortar retail. Photo: Flickr First of all Microsoft announces plans for a flagship Fifth Avenue Store to compete with Apple 's iconic glass cube, and now Amazon apparently wants to get in on the brick-and-mortar game, too. According to the Wall Street Journal , Amazon plans to open its first physical retail store in time for Christmas on Manhattan's 34th Street. While that might seem counter-intuitive for a company which essentially dealt the death knell to many brick-and-mortar stores, it's designed to be an extension of the online experience — offering customers the ability to pick up orders placed online , or return and exchange products. The store itself is located in a 12-story building, which will function much like a miniature Amazon warehouse. Although it's certainly a different retail approach to the one employed by Apple , it nonetheless is another example of the two companies competing over similar turf. In recent years Amazon and Apple have taken on one another in the smartphone sector (handily won by Apple ) and the e-book arena (victory: Amazon). Now it looks like they're set to compete over the retail experience in New York, with Amazon's outlet being within striking distance of several notable Apple Stores. Let the battle commence! Jony Ive Not Flattered By Apple Copycats If you copy anything Apple does, Jony Ive doesn't particularly like you. Ive is the Senior Vice President of Design at Apple, and the man who makes sure the company's products look the way they look. Supermodel Liu Wen is featured on the cover of the new issue of Vogue China this month, and she's seen throughout the issue wearing the Apple Watch. Vogue China editor-in-chief Angelica Cheung explained to Business of Fashion why the Apple Watch is featured on the cover of the issue. When Jonathan Ive and Tim Cook talked me through how they developed the concept of the Apple Watch from the beginning, I was impressed by their thoughts and passion for the project, then I saw the watches and thought they looked rather good; some are sporty and others are very classic and elegant. At the same time, they all have so many functions that would be useful in our daily life. I just thought that they combined technology, style and functionality and were very modern and, therefore, perfect accessories for the modern-day woman which is what the Vogue China woman is about. Here's the new cover: Apple has been promoting the Apple Watch to fashion designers and journalists. A launch event for the Apple Watch was held in Paris , and was attended by US Vogue editor Anna Wintour, fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, as well as Apple designers Jony Ive and Marc Newson. One of our go-to desserts this time of year are delicious stewed apples… Ingredients: apples (any type) 1 tbsp brown sugar sliver of butter dash of cinnamon dash of ground cloves Directions: Core your Apple and place in microwavable dish. Blend sugar and spices. Play around with amounts and different spices, to make your own special blend. Layer inside cored Apple teeny dabs of butter and sugar blend. In the wake of the successful launch of the new iPhones, short sellers got out of the way of Apple. Its short interest plunged nearly 30% between the September 15 and September 30 settlement dates. While Apple was slipping down the list of the most shorted stocks on the Nasdaq, it passed Microsoft on the way up, with a 30% surge in short interest. The rest of the most shorted stocks were the usual suspects, and the top five all had short interest of more than 100 million shares at the end of the period. The number of Sirius XM Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) shares short increased by about 5.70 million to more than 249.84 million, which was 10.3% of the float. Before this, short interest had been shrinking since the end of June, and now it would take more than six days to cover all short positions. Sirius lost a royalties-related suit during the period. The stock's price fell less than 3% in the two-week period and has pulled back further since. Shares closed at $3.28 on Thursday, in a 52-week range of $2.98 to $4.18. In the period when it announced management changes, the short interest in Frontier Communications Corp. (NASDAQ: FTR) slipped a bit from the previous period to around 148.04 million shares, or 14.9% of the telecom's float. That was the fewest number of shares short in the past year. It would take more than 18 days to cover all short positions. Shares rose more than 2% in the two-weeks to September 30 but have pulled ba ...
